Letters of Recommendation

Dear Suse,

It was a genuine pleasure to have you as a guest speaker for our conference.  I know first-hand the impact of your books on young children and can't thank you enough for sharing your talent in this way.

You were so gracious to everyone while participating fully in the activities, in addition to providing excellent presentations, that we couldn't have asked for more from you.

I hope that our paths will cross again in the future.

In the meantime, we send our best wishes for continued success.

Warmest regards,

Julie Agard

To Whom It May Concern,

Suse MacDonald was our featured author/illustrator on May 10, 2012 for the 2012 Hardin County (Ohio) Young Author's Conference. During our Young Author Conference week Suse visited three local school districts, presenting full day programs, along with presenting at our full day Hardin County Young Author's Conference. 150 students and 20 teachers were in attendance at the Conference. Suse related very well with the students. She engaged them during her presentation which included sharing the books she had created, revealing her craft through a slide presentation, drawing an alphabet animal using student suggestions, and patiently answering the never-ending questions the students posed. Ms. MacDonald differentiated her presentations to match the age-range of the student audience. She also adjusted her presentations at the school districts so the students who attended the Young Author's Conference would not see the same presentation content as they did at their home school. Suse used a multi-media approach which enhanced her presentation and captured students' attention. We were very pleased with Suse MacDonald's work ethic, stage presence, presentation graces, enthusiasm for her craft, and student rapport. It was a delight to have her be our "celebrity" in Hardin County, Ohio for a week. We are thankful for the lives she touched during her visit.

Dear Suse,

Your presentation at Bonsall Elementary School was a tremendous success. Your ability as an artist and writer were beautifully shared with our third, fourth and fifth graders. They enjoyed your slide presentation and now have a better understanding of your creative process. Your ease in relating to the students was refreshing. They realize that authors can be anyone with a good idea. Perhaps you planted seeds of creativity with our students.

I appreciate you taking time form your busy schedule to share your experiences of education, creativity, relationships and life with the next generation. They are certainly richer for the experience.

Being able to ask you questions, engaged them and allowed them to know you better as a person as well as an author. It was a wonderful experience and I look forward to future visits. Thank you for your time and expertise.

Sincerely,

Jane Dupes

To Whom It May Concern:

It is a pleasure for me to write about our experience with Suse MacDonald. I have been a fan of her work ever since Suse's first book, Alphabatics, was published. I use it with my classes every year. Suse's deceptively simple concepts touch the creativity in my students.

Even before we had formally arranged the visit, Suse sent us packets of information and lesson suggestions for using her books. With these we were able to both acquaint the children with Suse's work and also to teach a number of different art, language and math lessons based on them. Included in the packet were all the steps for a successful author visit, clearly organized in a pattern that we will be able to use each year.

Suse presented programs on two of her books, Elephants On Board and Sea Shapes. In an entertaining and informative manner, Suse shared the inner workings of illustration and publishing. Who knew that a book contract would be eighteen pages long or that you could have such fun researching material! As a finale, Suse created original drawings with the children that we have hanging proudly in our school. Suse even stayed very late after school admiring the work the students had done to welcome her. We thoroughly enjoyed her visit.

To Whom It May Concern:

Suse MacDonald was the Onondaga County Public Library's guest speaker for two programs celebrating Children's Book Week. Both programs were held in the three hundred seat auditorium of our local art museum.

Suse's morning presentation was geared to adults interested in children's literature and book illustration, such as teachers, public and school librarians, and art students from Syracuse University. Her afternoon session was for families with school-aged children.

Suse appropriately tailored her presentations to her audience. Her slide-illustrated talks covered material of interest to each group. At the afternoon session she gave a live drawing demonstration with the children's loud and enthusiastic input. She entertained questions from both audiences, giving thoughtful and respectful replies.

I recommend Suse as a speaker for schools and libraries. Her warmth and dedication are apparent, and her belief in inspiring children to be creative is contagious. She is especially patient with autographing books, giving each a personal touch. She is well prepared for her presentations and is organized and punctual.

Sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern,

Suse MacDonald inspired both children and adults as the featured author for our Young Authors Conference on May 13, 2000. Suse spoke to the more than nine hundred kindergarten through second grade students who attended two Saturday sessions. She featured her book Elephants on Board and somehow managed to make her presentation personal to each student. Her style of speaking was both informative and interactive as she involved the children in creating a new elephant character. I was especially impressed with her ability to keep the crowd of excited young authors involved and focused.

Suse visited several schools for half day presentations during the week before our conference. She not only provided students with encouragement for writing and creating, she affirmed the work they had done in preparation for her visit. These schools were diverse in composition and size, and she was able to customize her program for each audience due to her detailed preparation prior to her visit to Ft. Wayne.

Suse MacDonald's visit to Fort Wayne was a complete success. Both teachers and parents thanked her for her contribution to children. She was well prepared and flexible and showed a true commitment to encouraging children through the sharing of her own work. As I worked with her prior to the conference and during her time here, I was always aware of her desire to provide children with the best possible experience. She succeeded beautifully.

Sincerely,

Marlo Quick, Teacher

Dear Suse,

I want to thank you for coming to East Stroudsburg University as the featured author of our Professional Development School's First Annual Literacy Conference. Your contribution to the conference was significant and impressive. It was a great opportunity for practicing teachers and pre-service teachers to learn about the process of developing visual and verbal literacy. You made it real and interesting for the participants, in both your interactions with them and the demonstrations you gave. I am so happy you were able to be a part of this exciting day.

I also want to thank you for your flexibility during your stay. Since it was our first conference, we were not totally sure what to expect. Your easy going personality helped all of us remain calm as we worked through some of the kinks. I enjoyed getting to know you and look forward to a time when we can work together again. Thanks for everything.

Sincerely,

Mary Beth Allen, Ed.D, Professor

To Whom It May Concern:

Suse MacDonald recently spent a day at our school as a visiting author/illustrator. Her program was delightful, as was her interaction with the students and staff.

During the large group presentations, Suse showed and discussed the stages of her books, and used slides to further explain her writing and illustrating process. Next, She did some drawing for the students, inviting them to share ideas in the creative process. Suse maintained excellent control of each group, which included anywhere from 125 to 175 children.

Throughout the day, Suse also spent time autographing books and visiting classrooms to chat with students and teachers. She handled each setting and situation with flexibility, humor and graciousness.

Suse was very well-prepared, having carefully worked out the many details of her visit with me ahead of time. It was a pleasure working with her. Her visit to Parkdale was a truly memorable experience for our students and staff.
